Functions of Epithelial Tissue

Production

• The skin is made up of stratified squamous epithelium and it protects the skin from sunlight, bacteria and physical damage.
• Stratified epithelium is present on the surface of the vagina, it’s a barrier to pathogens.
• The outer surfaces of organs and blood vessels throughout the body are covered by squamous, columnar, and cuboidal epithelium.

Secretion

• Thyroid glands are made up of cuboidal epithelium and they secret thyroxine.
• Columnar epithelium lines the inner surface of the stomach and secretes gastric juice.
• Glandular epithelium represents the inner layer of skin and secrets sweat, oil, mucus, etc.
• Salaivary glands have cuboidal epithelium and they secrete salaiva.

Filteration

• Lining of kidney tubules is made up of cuboidal epithelium and filters the wastes from blood plasma.
• Ciliated epithelium of your respiratory tract filters out dirt and particles and cleans the air that you breathe in.

Absorption

• The cuboidal epithelium is present on kidney tubules and it re-absorbs useful materials from urine.
• The inner surface of the intestine columnar epithelium is present and its function is absorption of nutrients.

Others functions

• Ciliated epithelium sweeps the ovum towards the uterus.
• The Alveoli of the lungs have simple squamous epithelium, it permits diffusion of gases.
• Capillaries have simple squamous epithelium. It helps the exchange of materials.
