Obelia Characteristics
- They are marine animal and belong to the Hydrozoa class.
- They are colonial organism, meaning it consists of multiple individuals called polyps connected to each other.
- The body of Obelia is cylindrical in shape and can grow up to several centimeters in length.
- The structure of its body is transparent and gelatinous in nature.
- Obelia polyps have a tubular structure with a mouth surrounded by tentacles used for feeding.
- In tentacles of Obelia, have stinging cells called nematocysts, which are used to capture prey.
- Obelia colonies are usually found attached to rocks or other kinds of substrates.
- These organisms use their tentacles to filter smaller organisms and organic particles out of the water.
- They reproduces both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction occurs through budding, where new polyps grow from the parent polyp.
- They are reproduce sexually, Obelia releases its eggs and sperm into the water, resulting in the formation of larvae that eventually settle and develop into new polyps.
